How Sylva is Driving Innovation in Open Source and Telco Cloud

By September 26, 2024October 8th, 2024No Comments

This September has been an exciting time for the Sylva project, with significant strides made both in the open-source and telco sectors. From hosting a mini-summit at Open Source Summit Europe to presenting at the Cloud IPCEI Nexus Forum, Sylva continues to drive innovation and collaboration across industries. Here’s a recap of our recent accomplishments and what’s coming next for the Sylva community.

Sylva Mini-Summit at OSS EU – A Success

On 19 September 2024, Sylva hosted its Mini Summit during the Open Source Summit Europe in Vienna. With 42 attendees and engaging presentations, the half-day event offered a deep dive into Sylva’s latest developments, focusing on key topics like Workload Cluster GitOps, CNF GitOps & Continuous Testing, and HostBasedRouting. The summit provided a platform for the community to see live demos of Sylva in action and gain insights into the project’s strategic objectives.

Key Highlights:

  • Workload Cluster Declarative Provisioning & Upgrades: Introducing the benefits of an Immutable OS.
  • Oracle SIG GitOps Provisioning: Exploring efficient GitOps workflows.
  • HostBasedRouting: Understanding the ‘why’ and ‘how’ behind this approach.

The event concluded with a roadmap overview by project leader Guillaume Nevicato, highlighting the #ORAN use case as a future focus area for Sylva.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who participated and made the event a success! Your contributions and enthusiasm continue to drive the project forward.

Sylva’s Growing Impact within Cloud IPCEI

Sylva recently made waves at the Nexus Forum, an event hosted under the umbrella of the Cloud IPCEI (Important Project of Common European Interest). As part of the Telco & Edge Cloud Cluster within IPCEI, Sylva plays a central role in advancing the containerization layer (CaaS) of the cluster. This effort is supported by major partners, including Orange, TIM, Telefonica, Reply, Deutsche Telekom, Tiscali Italia, Leaseweb, and OpenNebula System.

The IPCEI initiative aims to accelerate the adoption of cutting-edge technologies across Europe, and Sylva’s contributions are positioning it as a leader in the Telco & Edge Cloud space.

Case Study Spotlight: Transforming Telco Cloud with Orange Telco Cloud (OTC) and the Sylva Framework

Telco operators are facing growing demands for flexibility and efficiency, and Orange Telco Cloud (OTC), powered by the Sylva framework and SUSE’s Adaptive Telco Infrastructure Platform (ATIP), is delivering solutions that transform cloud-native infrastructure.

With deployments across multiple regions, OTC has drastically optimized resource usage, cutting server requirements by up to 55% and reducing operational costs by 30%. This is a powerful example of how the Sylva framework supports scalable, cost-efficient solutions for telco clouds.

Looking Ahead: What’s Next for Sylva?

Sylva has a packed roadmap ahead, with continued focus on:

  • Expanding the #ORAN use case and refining HostBasedRouting.
  • Onboard new Network Functions on  5G, Voice Messaging & Edge Services
  • Collaborating with more partners through the Cloud IPCEI.
  • Increasing community involvement with further summits and technical deep dives.
